Meet Sugar — A Sweet, Feisty Senior Survivor Looking for Her Forever Home
Sugar is estimated to be between 13 and 16 years old, and this little lady has quite a story. She was rescued from an Los Angeles shelter just two hours before she was scheduled to be euthanized. Whatever life handed Sugar before that day, she survived it—and she still has plenty of personality to prove it.
Sugar’s early history is unknown, but she arrived with signs that she hadn’t always received the care she needed. Her feet have some scarring and skin growth from previously unmanaged allergies. She also has a cataract in one eye, some hearing and vision loss, and dry eye, which is common for her breed. She currently receives moisturizing eye drops and allergy medication.
None of that has stopped Sugar from enjoying life.
She loves curling up in her bed, cuddling on a lap, and tagging along with her person. Trips for ice cream? Absolutely. A Starbucks run for a pup cup? She’s ready. She can run a little warm, so when she’s had enough lap time, she’ll happily climb down and find a comfortable spot of her own.
Sugar lives with other dogs and enjoys joining in when they play or start barking. She may not see or hear as well as she once did, but that hasn’t stopped her from letting everyone know she’s still the boss.
She also currently lives with cats. She used to chase them, but she has learned not to with correction. She does, however, believe her food is strictly off-limits to feline inspection!
And Sugar loves her food. Some of her favorites include puppy patties, cheese, salmon and treats. Because of her skin allergies, chicken has been discouraged as part of her regular diet.
Sugar is also very good about her bathroom routine and will try to let you know when she needs to go outside. Once she has finished her morning business—and given the grass a good celebratory scratch—she’s perfectly content to settle into her bed and snooze for hours.
Sugar has been loved and cared for in her current home for the past year and a half. Unfortunately, her caregiver now needs to devote significant time to caring for her mother while also managing several animals. This decision is about finding Sugar someone who has the time to give this special senior girl the attention and companionship she deserves.
Sugar doesn’t need a complicated life. She needs a soft bed, good food, her medications, a lap when she wants one, and someone who appreciates a tiny senior lady with a survivor’s heart and just enough sass to keep life interesting.
Sugar is located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
